The 110 square kilometer Eifel National Park, founded in 2004, is still considered a “development national park”. Protected areas in this category have 30 years to leave at least three quarters of their area to their own devices - only then do they meet the international criteria of a national park. But the national park motto “Let nature be nature” already applies to more than half of the area, which means that people are letting nature follow its own laws again. This enables thousands of threatened animal and plant species to spread again in the special and newly emerging habitats...
